End of the School Year Smile Guide

Healthy Teeth all Summer long

As the school year wraps up, families everywhere are gearing up for summer fun, and lots of outdoor adventures. While it’s a wonderful time for kids to relax and recharge, it can also be a season when healthy habits, including dental care, start to slip.

Summer tends to bring more treats, ice cream trucks, sugary drinks, and snack-filled days at the pool. While occasional treats are perfectly fine, it’s important to keep balance in mind.

Smile-friendly nutrition tips:

  • Encourage fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and cucumbers

  • Choose water over sugary drinks like soda or sports drinks to reduce the risk of cavities.

  • Limit sticky or frequent snacking, which can allow sugar to linger on teeth longer.

  • Incorporate calcium-rich foods like yogurt, cheese, and milk to strengthen enamel.

Keep Brushing & Flossing a Daily Priority

With summer’s flexible schedules, it can be easy to forget twice-daily brushing and flossing, but consistency is key!

Build a simple routine:

  • Brush twice a day for 2 minutes each time

  • Use a fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss once daily

  • Consider setting reminders or tying brushing to daily habits (like breakfast and bedtime)

Younger children may need supervision to ensure they’re brushing effectively, while older kids can benefit from encouragement and accountability.

Pack Smart for On-the-Go Smiles

Whether your child is heading to camp, sleepovers, or family vacations, don’t forget their dental essentials!

Travel dental kit checklist:

  • Toothbrush (with a cover)

  • Fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss or floss picks

  • Reusable water bottle

Summer is the perfect time to check in on your child’s oral health before the busy school year begins again. A professional cleaning and exam can:

  • Catch small issues before they become bigger problems

  • Reinforce good hygiene habits

  • Keep your child confident with a healthy smile

Keep Those Smiles Shining All Season!

A healthy smile doesn’t take a vacation! With balanced nutrition, consistent hygiene, and a little planning, your child can enjoy all the fun summer has to offer without compromising their dental health.

If you have questions or want to schedule a visit, our team at UPD Dental is always here to help. Let’s make this summer full of happy, healthy smiles!
